Description:

The Healing Hands Foundation (THHF) is an all volunteer, non-profit organization providing high quality health care to patients in areas lacking medical resources and surgical expertise. We provide pediatric surgery, general surgery, plastic surgery, OB/GYN care and surgery, dental care, cardiology services and general adult and pediatric medicine. Our aim to improve quality of life, decrease incidence of illness and death, and enable people to be productive members of their community. Our surgeons perform surgeries which not only have obvious cosmetic benefits, but also correct functional defects: cleft lip and palate repairs so that children can eat and speak normally, release of restrictive burn scars to allow patients to move their fingers or arms, and repair of congenital malformations of the ear so that children can hear. Other examples of life changing interventions are elimination of chronic dental pain, removal of gynecologic tumors, and treatment of infections which otherwise would fester or become life threatening.

One of the founding principles of THHF is the importance of building quality relationships with recipient communities. We form partnerships with existing in-country facilities, medical professionals and community members. Not only do patients appreciate coming to facilities which are familiar to them, but we enjoy working along side local health care workers who can teach us the nuances of infectious diseases, malnutrition, and other maladies not commonly seen in the US. They are also invaluable in demonstrating how to be efficient and effective in under resourced areas. In addition to the medical staff, we work together with local community members who can effectively publicize our presence and assist with numerous logistical needs.

On a typical mission trip, a group of 20-40 volunteers spend 10 days working, eating, and sleeping together. The team coordinates logistics and services, resulting in the provision of humanitarian aid in the form of medical care, dental care, surgical care, and medical education. Before each trip, mission sites are assessed by the board of directors to ensure the community has adequate facilities in which to operate or set up clinic. Locations are also evaluated for appropriate housing, food, security, and transportation.
