Description:

Our Mission is to be a network to promote health and wholeness working through
partnerships on many levels both national and international, involving many sectors of
society both public and private — joining forces to deal with problems that rob children
of their chance to experience “Shalom”.

Our Vision for MAMA is to build a “wall of protection” around children born into
adverse environments to allow not just survival but also development to their full
potential.

Core Program

To fulfill its stated Mission, MAMA recognizes four essential components to its ministry:

Outreach

The most severely malnourished children are largely invisible and tend to be located in
isolated, rural settlements. OUTREACH staff travel to remote communities to assess,
propose and provide appropriate interventions, including medical services, residential treatment, deworming, acute nutritional treatment, and dietary supplementation.

Nutritional education

Families can learn how to provide for the essential nutritional needs of their children.
The illiterate learn by preparing food and eating it. Food service employees assist
families to learn functional nutrition. Only through nutrition education can the results
obtained in acute treatment be sustained. All cultures resist adopting new foods
despite the nutritional benefits.

Agronomy

Appropriate nutrition can be maintained only with the availability of adequate dietary
resources. The surest means of providing an adequate diet is to empower families to
raise most of their own food.

Aftercare

Change is seldom dramatic and permanent. AFTERCARE involves many of the steps
present in OUTREACH. This component recognizes that love is patient, not easily
discouraged, and continues to care despite frequent backsliding. Consistent follow-up
eventually results in permanent changes.
