Description:

In support of LLU's international outreach mission, GHI collaborates with select sites to improve health around the world. We send employees, students, and other volunteer professionals to partner with other health professionals to improve access and the quality of patient care. We provide short-term opportunities for international health care professionals to upgrade their skills through training and learning in Loma Linda. We also support our projects by triaging and procuring appropriate medical equipment and supplies, much of which comes out of our own health care system.

GHI has the following programs available:

1. Student Outreach
Student for International Mission Service (SIMS)

2. Professional Volunteer Opportunities
International Service Program (ISP)

3. Short-term Mentorships
International Professional Development Program (IPDP)

4. Medical Equipment and Supplies GHI Warehouse

GHI serves as a coordination point to match qualified staff and volunteers with specific needs and requests that we receive from our network of strategic interest sites around the world. GHI staff works with the volunteer for assignment preparation, institutional approval, and to provide guidance related to visas, travel, and other logistical support.

Some of the service opportunities at LLU international strategic interest sites for LLU employees, residents, and volunteers include:

Administrative or clinical consultation
Clinical care at a mission hospital or project site
Community health assessment
Lecturing

International resident rotation

A joint collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education office, Loma Linda University Medical Center residency programs, and the Global Health Institute (GHI).

For over 100 years, Loma Linda University's employees, faculty, and students have served others through a global network of hospitals and clinics owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Those who have served abroad have come back enriched and blessed because of their experiences and the help they have given others. Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) strives to create synergy and sustainability by focusing resources and expertise at approved LLUH partner international service sites. You too, can become part of the long and rich tradition of service at LLUH.

Short-term trips

SIMS organizes short-term service trips around the globe for groups of 15-20 students and health professionals during winter, spring and summer school breaks. SIMS teams are interdisciplinary and composed primarily of LLU students from various schools, as well as LLUAH employees. Other volunteers may be able to participate in a trip depending on available space.

Team trips typically last from 7 days to three weeks. The goals and objectives of each trip vary based on the stated needs of the host country and organization. Trip activities generally may include providing primary medical care, dental services, public health education, evangelism, and children's programs to an under-served community.

Objectives: Team trips allow students to actively participate in the global mission of Loma Linda University by providing humanitarian service to world communities through programs that enhance their quality of life. SIMS' team trips enable students to develop cultural competency in an international healthcare setting by exposing them to healthcare systems and delivery in countries where resources and medical supplies are extremely limited.
