When people are denied the opportunity of health, simply because they are poor, the problem is one of human rights and social justice. Through a comprehensive approach to primary health care and community health, we believe we can change the way patients, communities, and the health system work together to give everyone the opportunity of a healthy life. Our model of community-based health promotion is based on three pillars:

Building Health Care Capacity — a community health workers program focusing on patient care, particularly chronic disease management, and health education
Dignifying Patient Care — primary health care field clinics every four months to provide underserved patients with continuity of care and access to a network of sub-specialists
Promoting Public Health — a commitment to public health research and collaboration to address the underlying determinants of health and illness, and to strengthen the local health system
Since our founding in the fall of 2009, we have become the only organization on the north coast that combines a year-round Community Health Workers Program with direct provision of continuous primary health care.

Medical Service Trip Volunteers

Volunteers enable HHI’s primary health care field clinics to provide continuity of care in impoverished communities of the Dominican Republic. Volunteers join an international team of clinicians, pharmacists, medical interpreters, students, community health workers, and public health educators for a challenging, rewarding, and memorable week of service.
